Genoa’s Manolo Portanova could be handed five-year ban in gang rape case

Manolo Portanova, who currently contracted to Genoa but is on loan at Reggiana, could now be handed a five-year ban from football in the gang rape case.

La Gazzetta dello Sport and La Repubblica state that the General Prosecutor’s Office for Sport has now appealed to the Sports Guarantee Board, asking for harsh sanctions. The demand is that Portanova should be banned for five years and a disbarment has also been proposed.

Back in November last year, Portanova was found guilty of gang rape and was initially handed a six-year-long prison sentence. The incident happened in May 2021 in Siena, where Portanova was one of the men who gang raped a student. He was subjected to house arrest in June 2022, but the player returned to training in July 2022.

The General Prosecutor has asked for the previous prison sentence to be made ineffective, but the decision is likely to be appealed by the player and his lawyers.
