Italian Olympic Committee President on the Super League: “Serie A becomes marginal in interest”

Italian National Olympic Committee President Giovanni Malago has stated that interest in Serie A will take a backseat because of a potential implementation of the Super League.

A22 have now brought about a new regulation of the Super League, stating that it will be a much more transparent and open league and it will have no fixed members. Serie A clubs had pulled out of the project back in 2021 and it remains to be seen how they react to the newer plan, which seems to have ironed out previous question marks.

Malago, the current CONI President, spoke about how the introduction of the new Super League could impact Serie A and he believes that it would marginalise interest in the Serie A, because more focus will be on the ESL.

He told Sky Italia: “With the Super League, the scudetto becomes waste paper? I certainly can’t say it, but the risk of it becoming marginal in terms of interests exists.”

He further stated: “I do not comment on sentences, I have never done so, even those that I do not understand or do not agree with, Given this, the relevant bodies will have to prepare precautionary logic and countermeasures compared to what the European Court has foreseen. Now we must understand what countermeasures FIFA and UEFA will take”

FIFA and UEFA have already condemned the new plan, with the Premier League seemingly staying away from it – so far. Further developments will be rather intriguing.
