As it stands, the Biancocelesti currently sit in 10th with 16 points, a single point adrift from seventh placed Roma. With Sarri’s side coming off a crucial 1-0 victory against Feyenoord in the Champions League throughout the mid-week fixtures, the Italian tactician hopes that the injection of confidence can assist his side in turning their worrisome season around as they have only won three of their last five league fixtures.
The 33 year-old marksman touched upon the significance of the match in regards to the standings, as well as the emotions and excitement that surrounds the derby:
This will be your 14th derby: what makes the derby special?
“The derby is always an exciting match, more than the others I have experienced in my career. It is something that goes beyond, even in terms of the spectacle in the stands, the support and the colours. The wait makes it special: the city stops, everyone starts to have been talking for many weeks before.”
What did the victory against Feyenoord leave behind, crushed by your 200th goal in the Biancocelesti?
“Tuesday’s victory gave us confidence, they were three important points for the future of a truly balanced group. I hope it left us with all that strength and energy that we will need in view of the derby. In the championship we lost a few too many points and we want to recover.”
Four wins and 6 goals in derbies: what is your best memory so far?
“Obviously all the goals scored in the derbies are always beautiful. Then there are the heaviest goals, the ones that helped us bring home unforgettable victories. The goals that I remember with most pleasure are the two scored, between the first and second legs, in the semi-final of the 2017 Italian Cup, when we reached the final and a few months later we won the Italian Super Cup against Juventus.”
Immobile has scored some vital goals for Lazio this season and that includes the Champions League goal against Feyenoord recently but injuries have curtailed his presence in the side. But there is an expectation that the Italian should start in the derby later today.
