Stefano Pioli on Milan’s Champions League exit: “It’s a bittersweet evening”

Milan crashed out of the Champions League tonight despite beating Newcastle 2-1 away from home.

The result means Milan get Europa League football after Christmas whilst Newcastle are out of Europe completely.

As reported by Milan News, Stefano Pioli said: “It’s a bittersweet evening. Bittersweet because Milan hadn’t won in England since 2005, we fought and believed. Satisfaction for the victory certainly but there is a bit of regret and a bit of disappointment for being out of the Champions League”.

Pioli spoke about the Europa League still being a big competition and the fact that Milan have never won it.

Milan are faltering in the league, nine points behind Inter and seven points behind Juventus. Pioli sees the chance to improve their league performances now that they are out of the Champions League.

He said: “Now we have the chance to do better in the league. We are not even in the middle of the league, there are still many games to face.”

Milan continue their league campaign against Monza on Sunday.
