Romelu Lukaku’s permanent Roma move hinges on Champions League qualification

The future of star striker Romelu Lukaku will top the agenda as Roma get ready to reveal their new General Manager.

Despite having just welcomed Daniele De Rossi as their new coach, the future remains uncertain at AS Roma. La Gazzetta dello Sport have revealed that the end of the Serie A season will see a radical shake-up both on and off the field.

The first casualty looks certain to be Chief Football Operating Officer Maurizio Lombardo, who arrived in the capital in 2021 and whose current contract expires in June. The ex General Secretary at Juventus could be about to make a return to Turin with his future set to be decided next week.

CEO Lina Souloukou, who took up her post at Trigoria last April on the specific instructions of owner Dan Friedkin, is keen to stay despite interest from several clubs around the world.

As far as the playing side is concerned, goalkeeper Rui Patricio and full-back Leonardo Spinazzola are both out of contract this summer with the latter already reported to be ready to leave in the current transfer window.

The big question is what will happen to striker Romelu Lukaku at the end of the current campaign? The Belgian striker is currently owned by Chelsea who are reported to be wanting €42 million from any interested parties. Roma are keen to secure the 30-year-old on a permanent basis, but know that qualification into next season’s Champions League is a necessity to be able to part with that kind of money.

The alternative would be to sell Tammy Abraham, who despite missing the entire season so far with injury, is one of the primary earners at the club. Gazzetta also claims that the next few weeks will be key to the futures of several loanees, including Rasmus Kristensen, Diego Llorente and Sardar Azmoun.

Two players the pink journal states will definitely not be playing for the Giallorossi next term are young defender Dean Huijsen, currently on-loan from Juventus and Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches who has played just 228 minutes all season.
