Who is the record champion in Italy?

In the 2022/23 season, SSC Napoli sensationally won the Scudetto. But who is actually the record champion in Italy?

SSC Napoli secured the Scudetto, the Italian Serie A championship, in a sensational manner in the 2022/23 season—it was their first title in 33 years, and an entire region was absolutely ecstatic.

However, this also means that Napoli is not exactly known as a serial champion in Italy. Surely there must be a team that has won the championship in Italy more often? Milan, Inter, Juventus, Lazio, or perhaps even AS Roma?

Serie A 2023/24: The facts

  • Competition: Serie A

  • Country: Italy

  • Teams: 20

  • Defending Champion: SSC Napoli

The history of the competition

The first Italian championship organized by the recently founded Federazione Italiana Football (FIF) took place in 1898 – the first champion was CFC Genoa. In the early years, they were practically without competition, winning six of the first seven championships.

Subsequently, AC Milan and SG Pro Vercelli also won several championships, before the league had to pause from 1916 to 1919 due to World War I. In the 1930s, Juventus Turin came to prominence, securing five titles in a row. If you are interested in the Seria A you can compare football teams by clicking on the link.

Juventus pulls ahead

The Old Lady amassed title after title, with Milan and Inter (then still under the name Ambrosia Inter) also able to win some championships. However, Juventus remained the ultimate powerhouse, although Milan and Inter had some strong periods with several consecutive titles.

Clubs with the most titles

No team could really catch up to Juventus Turin, the Old Lady is the record champion in Italy with 36 titles. It could have been one more title, had the 2004/05 championship not been retrospectively revoked due to the Calciopoli scandal.

Following in the ranks are the city rivals Inter Milan and AC Milan – both clubs have currently won the Italian championship 19 times each. The Seria A Standings suggest that Inter Milan will be ahead of AC Milan since they are on the way to title number 20 in this season.

In fourth place are not Napoli, Lazio, or Roma – but Genoa with nine titles.

Club Titles

  • Juventus 36

  • Inter 19

  • Milan 19

  • CFC Genoa 9

  • FC Turin 7

  • FC Bologna 7

  • Pro Vercelli 7

  • AS Roma 3

  • SSC Napoli 3

Torino, Bologna, and Pro Vercelli (each with 7) have also won more championships. Roma and Napoli stand at a total of three Italian championship titles, while Lazio, like AC Florence, has won the Scudetto twice.
