Luis Alberto will go down as a Serie A cult hero and a Lazio icon, but the Spaniard has taken a shot at the Roman club in an interview with Il Messaggero.
Lazio take on Roma in the Derby della Capitale on Sunday. The ex-Biancocelesti midfielder spoke to the outlet about the game and in the process, also discussed the clubโs current situation amidst a tight financial situation.
He said, via Calciomercato, when asked about the lack of transfers in the summer: โIโd be angry, but it would be a losing battle for both the coach and the fans. We can only wait until January.โ
Adding more detail, Luis Alberto broke down where Lazio have gone wrong in the last few years.
โThe management made so many mistakes. In my opinion, the three crucial moments were Inzaghiโs departure, Tareโs, and finally Sarriโs. It was clear then that we wouldnโt get anywhere. Plus, when people who donโt understand much about football come in, it becomes difficult, and now it will be even more so.โ
The Spaniard stated that at least Maurizio Sarri understands football amidst the difficult situation.
โThank goodness thereโs a coach who speaks his mind and understands football, at least he does. But if the rest of the team doesnโt follow him, I wouldnโt show up when I got tired of broken words. People said it was just about the money, but the fans who really know me know it was a matter of respect. You donโt change agreements day after day. Players get fed up over time. But these things will never change.โ
This is in reference to the midfielderโs comments about how Lazio changed terms of a new contract and this led to his exit.
โThe renewal? The cards on the table changed every day, but the manager was always on my side.โ
It is clear that many things are wrong at Lazio and there is a lot to be sorted out before Sarri takes the blame, as a huge derby awaits them.
