Jose Mourinho looks back on Roma spell and explains sacking

Jose Mourinhoโ€™s Real Madrid will take on Serie A giants Roma in what will be an emotional clash for the Portuguese. He still holds the spell in the Italian capital close to his heart and he spoke about all of it in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.

Mourinho shed light on his connection with Roma, making it clear that the Europa final was key to all of it but also brought about his downfall.

He said: โ€œThe Budapest final is the pinnacle of this connection.โ€

Mourinho was also asked about how referee Anthony Taylor has ill-treated by Roma fans after what was an eventful final.

He responded: โ€œMy responsibility is only for what happened in the tunnel with the referee, not for what happened at the airport.โ€

Shedding light on his sacking, Mourinho said it came down to his relationship with the Friedkins.

I paid the price with my relationship with the owners, who had a different profile than mine, and a different approach to that final.โ€

Adding more detail to why the Europa League final was important, he said: โ€œThe day of the final in Budapest, I was fired: when I returned from vacation, I was already dead.โ€

Jose set for special reunion

Roma fans still have a connection with Mourinho, who really became an emblem for the club in their battle for silverware. He also managed to carve out an us-against-the-world scenario too, which only helped things.

When he returns to Rome with Real Madrid next week, he will surely be heralded with something special.
