Milan threw away two points against Sassuolo, says Ruben Amorim

Serie A Milan were held to a 1-1 draw by Sassuolo on Sunday, as they failed to take advantage of having taken the lead in the second half. Towards the end of the game, the Neroverdi were more likely to get the winner, but it ended in a rather deserved draw.

Ruben Amorim spoke to Sky 24 after tie and added important insight to how the game unfolded.

He made it clear that Milan threw away two points.ย

The Portuguese said โ€“ via MilanNews: โ€œWe deserved the lead, but after the goal, itโ€™s clear we should have managed the game better, kept more possession, and curbed the opponentโ€™s reaction. We canโ€™t afford to concede goals from corners. Itโ€™s clear we canโ€™t be satisfied when we throw away two points like that.โ€

Amorim made it clear Milan need to reduce the number of transitions they concede and should focus more on controlling.

โ€œWe need to keep doing what we were doing until the goal and then keep going, keep possession and not make the game about transitions. Clearly, as you saw, we wanted to control the game, push forward, find the right combinations, and play well.โ€

โ€œSometimes itโ€™s a question of mentality: you score a goal and you have to keep pushing, because itโ€™s clear that the opponent wants to try to react, and so we should have had much more possession.โ€

Amorim also revealed that the side is focusing on build-up and lacked the right combinations in the final third.

โ€œWeโ€™re working on our build-up play now, and you can see it in some phases of the game. However, we need to work better on our combinations in the final third of the pitch; at times, they managed to close us down in midfield and block our path on the left flank, and in those situations, we should have started looking for players inside the pitch a bit more.โ€

Despite the disappointment, it was another game where Milan looked a bit flexible in shape than being very rigid like they were earlier in the season. It is a sign that Amorim has realised what suits the team more and is willing to adapt to their strengths.
