Romaโ€™s Donyell Malen: โ€œI was the one who wanted to leave Aston Villaโ€

Serie A side Roma have seen Donyell Malen thrive since he joined the club from Aston Villa, with the Dutchman becoming one of the most potent goalscorers in Europe. The striker has now opened up on what led to his exit from the Birmingham club.

Malen spoke to Corriere dello Sport in a detailed interview and he was asked about a host of issues.

When asked about his Aston Villa exit, he revealed he was the one who pushed for the departure.

Malen said โ€“ via SiamoLaRoma: โ€œI was the one who wanted to leave Aston Villa. I wanted to play every Sunday, thatโ€™s important. I think I made the right choice.โ€ย

He also noted how Gian Piero Gasperini is bringing most out of his skillset.

Malen said: โ€œGasperiniโ€™s training sessions are tough, but Iโ€™ve never thrown up. Thatโ€™s why I learned โ€˜tired,โ€™ I have to say. Sometimes itโ€™s really too much, itโ€™s a tough training session. However, itโ€™s good for the team, weโ€™re all in good shape. We push ourselves, we train the way we play.โ€

The Dutchman revealed that his current position suits him a lot.

โ€œFor me, itโ€™s a middle ground, I feel more comfortable and more dangerous in the middle, and it shows here.โ€ย

This comes right after Malen grabbed an impressive brace against Real Madrid in mid-week. He has already scored a hattrick in the Serie A, which suggests canโ€™t get better for him. If anything, he will be vital in Romaโ€™s possible involvement in the title race.ย
