Wolves’ Joao Gomes: Napoli optimistic about summer move

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, via Napoli Magazine, Napoli are increasingly confident regarding a summer move for Brazilian midfielder João Gomes.

As mass exodus from Molineux this summer was practically guaranteed on Monday, when West Ham’s 0–0 draw with Crystal Palace confirmed Wolves’ impending relegation from the Premier League.

Despite a historically poor campaign that is taking Wolves down to the second tier, several players from the squad have impressed on an individual level and will attract suitors in the summer.

One such player is João Gomes. The Brazil international is in demand both in the Premier League and in the continent. Liverpool, Chelsea, and Man United from the English top flight are also vying for his signature, with £60 million mooted to be the price tag Wolves will be holding out for.

While interest from the Premier League bigwigs could help Wolves get something close to that amount, their relegation leaves them with little negotiating power, and Napoli are hoping their track record of bargain acquisitions off relegated English sides as well as the prospect of both Champions League football and Serie A title contention could help them persuade the Brazilian to put aside the English dream.

The Partenopei pulled off a similar trick in 2021 when they signed Frank Anguissa from a then-relegated Fulham for €16 million. The Cameroonian then went on to establish himself as one of the most reliable midfielders in Europe, playing a key role in Napoli’s title-winning campaigns in 2022/23 and 2024/25.

Giovanni Manna himself has executed some excellent deals from England, roping in Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour. There is every chance Gomes could be next, with previous reports indicating that personal terms were agreed in January.
