Sevilla closing in on Papu Gómez signing from Atalanta

Sky Sport report tonight that Sevilla are closing in on a deal to sign Atalanta playmaker Alejandro “Papu” Gómez. The La Liga side is offering a transfer fee in the region of €5-6m, excluding bonuses which would add a further €1-2m to the total.

With the Argentine frozen out of the Atalanta squad since mid-December following a falling out with manager Gian Piero Gasperini, the club had been looking to offload him this window. The number 10 had reportedly attracted considerable interest from other clubs in Italy, but La Dea had a preference for selling their prized asset abroad rather than to a potential direct rival.

Negotiations are currently at an advanced stage, with details over the total add-ons being discussed between the two parties. The clubs’ respective directors – Sevilla’s Monchi and Atalanta’s Luca Percassi – had been in ongoing talks with each other since yesterday.

Gómez leaves Atalanta after a successful six and a half years in Lombardy, in which he became a central piece of a free-scoring side that twice qualified for the Champions League with Gasperini at the helm. He previously played for Catania for three seasons, before a short-lived spell in Ukraine with Metalist Kharkiv.
