Chris Smalling close to signing new Roma contract

Roma have put forward a new contract offer for Chris Smalling, amidst talk of interest from Inter.

La Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Smalling’s current contract has a clause which allows him to trigger a contract renewal if he makes half the amount of appearances in the whole season. There has been talk of interest from Inter, but that has been fuelled by the player’s agent, who knows that this is Smalling’s last chance to earn a big contract.

Roma do not want to take part in any auction and they have made it clear that two months after Smalling makes the amount of appearances, if he doesn’t make up his mind to sign a new deal, Roma will be moving on from him.

As of now, he is happy to sign a new deal and he is expected to reach the appearances target to trigger the new deal by the winter. Roma have, therefore, put forward a two-year deal with a reduced salary and there are good signs that he will sign a new deal, despite interest from not just Inter but also from the Premier League.
