Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan doubtful for the World Cup

France national team coach Didier Deschamps will announce his squad for the 2022 World Cup on November 9. But it is now unlikely that Mian goalkeeper Mike Maignan will board the plane for Qatar.

According to what is reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via TuttoMercatoWeb), Maignan’s target of representing France in the upcoming World Cup appears to remain a distant dream, with a new calf injury understood to keep the goalkeeper out of action for the rest of 2022. And even if he makes the squad, it doesn’t seem possible that he would be available for France’s group-stage matches.

Confirming Maignan’s unavailability until the end of the year, Milan manager Stefano Pioli said, “Unfortunately, I know he will have to stay out until January.” Ciprian Tatarusanu should play as the first-choice custodian for the Rossoneri, while veteran Antonio Mirante will be his deputy.

Maignan started the season well with consecutive seven appearances in Serie A. Then, while playing for France in the UEFA Nations League game against Austria, the goalkeeper had to be withdrawn due to pain in his calf muscle.

After medical tests, it was previously anticipated that the 27-year-old would return before the World Cup. But having received a fresh blow to his calf recently, the Rossoneri number one looks uncertain about his World Cup future.
