OFFICIAL | Dries Mertens leaves Serie A side Napoli following contract expiry

Belgian star Dries Mertens has now left Napoli following the expiry of his contract at the club.

Mertens is currently Napoli’s highest goalscorer ever in the club’s history, having surpassed the tally of the legendary Diego Maradona already. While Napoli did try to extend his contract at the club, those attempts have now seemingly failed.

The club confirmed on social media that Mertens is leaving, by posting a ‘Thank you’ message for the versatile forward, who is now a free agent.

Aurelio de Laurentiis had recently confirmed that the club had made several contract offers to the player, who had pegged back all the approaches and as a result, Napoli had stopped in their attempts to make the Belgian stay.

Mertens’ exit means that Napoli have now lost Kalidou Koulibaly, Lorenzo Insigne and the Mertens in the same summer. While the other two have found their next clubs, Mertens has been linked with a move to Lazio.
