Chelsea explored signature of Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat in January

Premier League side Chelsea explored the possibility of signing Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat in the January transfer window.

Amrabat’s impressive performances in the FIFA World Cup led to global attention on the Moroccan, who attracted interest from Liverpool and Tottenham. Barcelona did make approaches for the Fiorentina player, but La Viola pegged back the offers on deadline day.

Fabrizio Romano has now reported that even Chelsea had explored the possibility of bringing Amrabat to Stamford Bridge and they had held direct contacts with La Viola. This was before they ended up signing Enzo Fernandez from Benfica, but Fiorentina were clear in their stance about not letting the player leave on loan.

It was reported that Amrabat had skipped training with La Viola on deadline day but the key reason for why they didn’t allow the player to leave was the lack of potential replacements and the limited time remaining to secure a signing.
