Jakub Jankto to become the first openly gay footballer in Serie A

Jakub Jankto is set to return to the Serie A and will become the first openly gay footballer in the league.

According to a report by Corriere Della Serra, Cagliari have successfully negotiated the signing of Jakub Jankto from La Liga side Getafe and he is set to become the first openly gay footballer in Serie A.

The 27-year-old revealed his homosexual identity last season while playing on loan at Slavia Prague and received widespread support from the football universe. Homosexuality is often kept hidden in football but Jankto stands as an inspiration for many such athletes who are considering announcing their sexual identity.

The midfielder is set to play under the guidance of his former coach Claudio Ranieri who will welcome the player with open arms.

Jankto has already played in Italy from 2016 to 2018 with Udinese, then three years at Sampdoria where he worked with his upcoming manager for two seasons.

A two-year contract with a salary of around €1 million including bonuses, and option to renew for another season awaits the player at Cagliari. Medical examinations are scheduled this week and club confirmations will arrive as soon as it is done.
