Nicolo Zaniolo confesses to a ‘gigantic love affair’ with Roma

Italian midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo has finally opened up about his time in Serie A with Roma, in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport (via tuttomercatoweb.com).

The 24-year-old, who currently ply’s his trade in Turkey after joining Galatasaray, on a season-long loan from Premier League side Aston Villa, spoke about being booed with the national team, when returning to the Stadio Olimpico;

“I’ll tell you the truth: I was kind of expecting them” he began, before revealing “The one with Roma was a gigantic love, even if it ended badly. Leaving was hard. Apart from the episodes of the last few days, they were all fantastic with me, as was Mourinho.”

Zaniolo, despite being one of the players implicated, but ultimately not found guilty, in the recent betting scandal, seems to have matured both as a player and as a person since leaving the Italian capital. He revealed if he had any regrets about what happened during his time with the Giallorossi;

At my age it doesn’t make sense too. I’ve experienced good things and bad things, I’ve done right things and wrong things, but Rome is also the city of my son Tommaso. For this reason alone, it will always be a special place.”

Zaniolo was quick to send his best wishes to Jose Mourinho after the Portuguese tactician as sacked by Roma, posting a message on Instagram of the two of them embracing following the Giallorossi’s victory in the European Conference League in 2022.
